Kuala Lumpur: The 24 contenders at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ have named the 26-strong squads they hope will steer them to glory at the continental Finals.
With just over eight days remaining until the 18th edition of Asia’s flagship men’s football competition kicks off, squads featuring the continent’s biggest names, as well as stars of the future, were formally registered on Tuesday.
Defending champions Qatar will be led by AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019™ MVP and top scorer Almoez Ali and the mercurial Akram Afif, four-time winners Japan have named a squad filled with Europe-based players while Australia will be represented by a mix of experienced stars and rising talent.
Son Heung-min will lead two-time champions Korea Republic, with the East Asian side determined to end their long wait for a third title, AFC Player of the Year 2022 Salem Al Dawsari will spearhead Saudi Arabia's charge for a fourth continental crown while the prolific Mehdi Taremi will lead three-time winners Islamic Republic of Iran's charge.
The 2023 edition of the AFC Asian Cup will begin when Qatar face Lebanon on January 12 at the Lusail Stadium, which will also be the venue for the final on February 10.
