Next WAP game to take place in Doha on October 12 against Abu Dhabi Quins
Doha, Qatar, 15 September 2024 – Doha Rugby Football Centre (DRFC) kicked off their West Asia Premiership (WAP) campaign this weekend with a pre-season friendly game against Bahrain Rugby Football Club (RFC).
A squad of 18 players, led by head rugby coach Elliot Johnston, traveled to Bahrain for the season opener on Friday, ready to make their mark in the WAP competition.
Commenting on the game, which saw Bahrain RFC win 36-0, Johnston said: “It was a very worthwhile trip to assess where we stand after our four-week pre-season block. It also serves as a good segue into our local league competition, which starts on Thursday.
“The boys really stepped up. The game could’ve gotten away from us, but we managed to restrict Bahrain. We have a few areas to focus on in the coming weeks—particularly our set pieces—but we’re very much looking forward to a competitive season.”
Martin de Torres, captain of the first XV, added: “Games against Bahrain are never easy, but I think the boys really rose to the challenge – and it was great to see a few players make their debut. The game was physical, and we did well to stay in it.
“It was a good test for us, and playing against a team like Bahrain shows us the standard we need to be at to compete in the WAP league. We have a lot to work on in training, but with a few more players still to come back, I’m confident the season will be a success.”
The WAP isa top-tier rugby competition in the Gulf that features clubs from across the region.
This year's teams include DRFC, Abu Dhabi Quins, JA Dragons RFC, Dubai Hurricanes, Bahrain RFC, Dubai Sharks, and Dubai Exiles RFC. Games will be played both home and away.
Additionally, this season, DRFC's various sections – men's, womens, vets, and minis & youth’s teams – will compete in a range of domestic games across three formats: 7s, 10s, and 15s.
