Officials of the organising committee of the 2023 Judo World Championships Qatar addressing a press conference in Doha on Tuesday ahead of the 62nd edition of the World Judo Championships which is set to take place from 7-14 May in Doha, Qatar at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena. Olympic and World Champions ready for Doha challenge

Doha, Qatar: A strong field of competitors, including multiple world champions Teddy Riner and Clarisse Agbegnenou, are vying for a total of 15 judo titles and Olympic qualifying points at the prestigious event which is held for the first time in the Middle East and in which 600 competitors from approximately 100 countries will be taking part. Organizers saidon Tuesday during the press conference that more than half of tickets for the Championships have already been sold. Speaking to reporters in Doha, officials said Qatar’s hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup has paved the way for preparations for the judo championship. “Of course we benefited from this tournament (FIFA World Cup) which was successful by all standards despite the challenges,” Khalid bin Hamad Al Attiyah, the President of the Qatar Taekwondo, Judo and Karate Federation, said. Echoing Al Attiyah’s remarks, Abdulhadi Al Marri, Marketing, Communication, Opening & Closing Ceremonies Committee director at the Qatar Olympic Committee noted that the World Cup’s legacy played a crucial role in preparations. The opening ceremony will be held on the second day of the event and will run for 45 minutes. Al Marri also added school students will be given access to the ceremony, noting the group has been a major focus for the event’s marketing strategy. A number of school visits were made in the lead up to the championship as part of Qatar Olympic Committee’s efforts to promote sports to youth, he added. At the 2022 World Judo Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Japan emerged as the dominant force with five world titles, followed by Brazil and the host nation Uzbekistan, each with two titles In addition to crowning world champions, the competition will also count towards qualification for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, with each judoka able to earn up to 2,000 points - the highest possible - for the Olympic ranking.
